Mathematics Department

The mathematics department of MGHS is committed to provide our students a strong foundation in mathematical concepts and problem-solving techniques that will help them in both their academic and professional endeavors. We've implemented policies and plans that will help us get to the top once more. These include prompt completion and thorough coverage of the curriculum, attentive observation and support of individual students by teachers, directed revision plans, and frequent internal and external assessments. Our goal is to make sure that the 2024 contenders running now post an outstanding mean at the end of the year. To accomplish this goal, we are urging them to collaborate and work harder and more intelligently. In order to improve our teaching and learning, we have increased and integrated our use of technology.
Enrichment activities for the whole school: To engage and challenge our mathematically talented children, we provide a range of enrichment activities. Every day from 1:20 to 2:20 pm is maths hour. During this time, students participate in discussions, quizzes, and interclass competitions. In addition to these, we hold an internal maths competition every term. Students from our school have participated in our maths club and competitions with remarkable success, gaining prizes and recognition in local, regional and national maths contests. Student support services: In order to help our students achieve, we have increased our student support services to include tutoring, extra help sessions, group work sessions, and academic advising. We understand that not all students are comfortable with mathematics. In order to help our students get the best results possible, we also provide continual evaluation exams and materials for test preparation. All things considered, we are pleased with the advancements and initiatives we have created in the last year, and we are still dedicated to giving our pupils a solid mathematical foundation that will benefit them for the rest of their life.
Languages Department

The Languages Department has at least sixteen teachers to staff the Kiswahili and English languages. Within the academic sphere, it is essential. With the exception of Kiswahili, English, for instance, is absolutely necessary for all other subjects to perform well. A strong knowledge of both English and Kiswahili increases the likelihood of receiving good scores in the other disciplines. Because of this, every student should take their studies extremely seriously and treat English and Kiswahili with the same level of concentration as any other subject. Pay attention to our handwriting—it is essential to getting high exam scores. Everyone should always make an effort to write clearly and elegantly. Recall that perfection comes from practice.
One's ability to communicate concepts during an exam will improve with increased frequency of speaking, reading, and writing. Avoid speaking in both Kiswahili and English simultaneously, as well as talking about other topics in Kiswahili. In the end, you won't be either of these places. To sum up, we want to reiterate what we already said: reading widely, writing a lot, and making an effort to speak the two languages fluently are the same steps that lead to success in both English and Kiswahili.
Sciences Department

The Mwaani Girls’ High School Science Department comprises three Science subjects; Biology, Physics, and Chemistry. The department has skilled, devoted, and diligent laboratory technicians. In addition, we have well-trained, devoted, experienced, and committed instructional staff members. Each of the department's well-furnished, contemporary laboratories has a store and a preparation area. Our teaching methodology includes practical instruction, which helps our students study the sciences in an engaging, joyful, and unforgettable way.
Every laboratory is equipped with modern, fixed equipment for learning digital content. For instance, use of labX change, which is an online lab. This has not only helped to make science courses more engaging for students, but it has also helped to clarify some abstract ideas that can be difficult for them to understand. The department plans the yearly science day as well as periodic symposiums. Through these exercises, students can instill important values like respect, responsibility, unity, and integrity in one another. We are very grateful to the Head of Subjects, the School Administration, and all of the science instructors and technicians for their unwavering support and dedication. The department is working to ensure that all of our subjects continue to progress in the upcoming years in order to achieve the national goals of Vision 2030 and beyond.
Humanities Department

The department of Humanities comprises of three subjects: History and Government, Geography and Christian Religious Education. All these are compulsory in Form one. Students choose between History and Geography at the end of form one. Christian Religious Education is compulsory up to form four. These are to be examined at the KCSE level. The subjects are generally interactive; engaging students in lots of discussion, arguments and analysis of facts, thus enabling them to bring out, develop and improve their personalities and social skills to their full potential. Performance of the three subjects at KCSE level is quite impressive and it has strongly contributed positively to the school’s mean grade. This is why they are referred to as booster subjects.
Applied Sciences Department

At MGHS, one of the important departments is the Technical and Applied Department. The department offers courses in computer studies, business studies, home science, and agriculture. As the Technical and Applied Subjects Department of Mwaani Girls, we supplement classroom knowledge with real-life application. These include proficiency with computer applications, agribusiness, home economics, and hospitality. The school offers a range of resources so that students can arm themselves with a variety of useful skills. Over the years, every subject in the department has maintained its strong performance in the national exams. In order to help students enhance their careers, teachers prepare them for advanced study in technical and applied fields. This will help our students adjust to a world that is increasingly focused on technology. Our Goal: To be the school's top department.
Guidance and Counseling
The Counseling Department is critical in enabling students' academic progress, improving student behaviour, assisting students in dealing with various obstacles, and making conscious decisions regarding jobs once they complete their secondary school education. Counseling is a transforming process in which students discover and enhance their scholarly and psychological potential. The department plays an unavoidable role in ensuring that students receive the assistance they require as they traverse high school. The department begins its work with the Form One orientation programme for new students. This allows students to easily adjust to high school life. This continues all through to Form Four where the candidates are motivated highly by a number of recognized motivational speakers and life coaches as they prepare for the national examinations and for life after high school.
Careers
Career guidance and selection of subjects is another crucial role played by the department. It assists students by providing information and tips so as to make informed career choices. It is at these critical career formative years that the learner requires adequate understanding of themselves in terms of academic potential, talent, skills, interests, personality traits, values, ambitions and dreams which are a guide to the career of choice.
Community and Partnerships
At MGHS, we believe in the power of partnership and collaboration. We actively collaborate with parents, alumni, and the local community to provide a strong support network for our students. We promote open communication and cultivate good ties with parents, informing them about their child's progress and involve them in the educational process. Our alumni network is an excellent source for mentorship, career advice, and networking opportunities. We also work with other educational institutions and organizations to broaden learning possibilities and provide our pupils a global perspective.
Competency-based Curriculum
A global paradigm change is occurring in the direction of competency-based education and training. In Kenya, the new curriculum is being adopted at the lower school levels. It is now being taught in Grade 8, and in a few years, higher education institutions will follow suit. Teachers at MGHS are ready to put it into practice when it eventually moves to senior school in 2026. All teachers received an induction from the Kenya Institute of Curriculum Development in 2022. Teachers have been sufficiently trained and equipped in terms of knowledge, attitude, and abilities for easy acceptance as they are the ones implementing the curriculum.
The goal of the competency-based curriculum is to provide students the 21st-century skills they need to succeed, including self-efficacy, creativity, imagination, critical thinking, problem-solving, communication, teamwork, and learning to learn. The school has given its teachers technology training so that a competency-based curriculum may be implemented smoothly; one of the key competency areas that the competency-based curriculum emphasizes is digital literacy.
Large class sizes, ample teaching, and learning resources have been set aside to implement CBC precisely because it is learner-centered. The school has equipped itself with modern science labs, modern science classrooms, modern libraries and technological devices like computers, laptops, and projectors among other things in order to satisfy the demands of the new curriculum. In its senior year, Mwaani Girls’ High School plans to major in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM). Social Sciences and Arts & Sports Science will also be provided.
